The City of Brisbane is a local government area (LGA) that comprises of the inner suburbs of Greater Brisbane. With a population of 1.1 million, the City of Brisbane makes up about half of all residents of Brisbane.[1] Brisbane City Council is the government authority for the area.
Demographics[]
In the 2016 census, the City of Brisbane recorded a population of 1,131,155 people, 50.8% female and 49.2% male. The median age of the Brisbane population was 35 years, 3 years below the national median. 63.6% of people living in Brisbane were born in Australia. The other top responses for country of birth were New Zealand (3.6%), England (3.5%), China (2.8%), India (2.4%) and Vietnam (1.2%).
Brisbane is a predominantly family local government area with 69.1% of households being family households. Of these family households, 59.8% have children. The other households are single-person households (23.7%) and group households (7.2%).[1]
Employment and wealth[]
In 2016, the City of Brisbane had an unemployment rate of 6.8%, 0.1% lower than the national rate. The top industries were hospitals (except psychiatric hospitals) (5.1%), cafes and restaurants (3.1%), State Government administration (2.9%), higher education (2.6%) and primary education (2.3%).
The weekly median household income was $1,746 (annually $90,792) and the weekly median personal income was $770 (annually $40,040).[1]
